Hello, My Name is Josh McRoberts
What's up everybody. I'm excited that I'm getting the chance to write my first blog here on Yardbarker. Hopefully I'll be able to give you something interesting to read and some insight into my first season in the NBA, on and off the floor. I'll be willing to talk about pretty much anything so give me some ideas about what you want to see or know more about. I had a tough start to the season. Some of you may know that I sprained my ankle pretty bad the second or third day of training camp. It was a freak accident but in a few seconds I was out for a month. It was a pretty ugly sprain...my ankle swelled up quickly and my foot and toes were purple for about three weeks. The other guys on the team made me cover it up anytime they were around because it looked so bad. The good news is that I've had time to get stronger in the weight room before the start of the season and I finally get to start practicing again a little bit tomorrow. I can't wait! I've enjoyed being in Portland so far, and I'm getting more comfortable and situated in my house. I'm living with two of my best friends Matt and Ian and we got lucky and found a pretty nice spot to live with a great view, i can try to upload a view pictures and maybe a tour of the house if theres any interest. Portland's a great city (especially when its sunny like it has been the past couple of weeks) and the people out here have been really nice. Today was a tough day for me because my team lost to the evil empire that is the New England Patirots. I was born and raised in Indianapolis, so I'm a diehard Colts fan. It hurt to see them lose at home when they dominated the game for so long. I watched the game over at Greg's house with him, our friend Brandon, and G's uncle. Taurean Green came and watched with us too, not as a fan but as a loud-mouthed, bandwagon-riding hater. I don't know why he was there; other than to talk nonstop about how the Colts were going to lose and to give me a hard time about wearing a Bob Sanders jersey. It's going to take me a few days to get over it, and I owe a few guys on the team dinner so I'll hear about the loss for a while. I guess there's always next week though. Other than that I don't have too much else to talk about right now. Give me a few ideas for next time and I'll try to keep this blog interesting and as entertaining as possible. Thanks for reading. See you soon.

Nice first blog post.
Since you haven't had much of a chance to play because of your ankle, here is a question about college. Who was the toughest ACC player you played against while at Duke?
Thanks for being here.

As a big duke fan I was sad to see you leave but I am glad that you ended up on a good young team with some old friends.
I live out in SF and alot of my buddies that I play ball with are big GS Warriors fans. I was telling them that you would have been an excellent pick at GS since they like to get out and run on transition and need guys who can pass, receive passes, and most of all rebound in a fast paced offense. What kind of system do you think best suits your particular skill set?
Look forward to hearing more from you

Anyway, I've been trying to press on Greg Oden through these comment streams, that it would benefit us all so much if you guys, from your unique vantage point, gave us exclusive content (videos, interviews, conversations) about the game and about the Portland Blazers. Go and interview Joel Pryzbilla about his journey in the NBA, or sneak us some video of the half time discussions during the game. Everything that helps us understand that professional athletes are real people too is good.
The more you give us, the happier we get, and ultimately the bigger the influence you have on the game. All the power to you Mr. McRoberts. Good luck to you!

I agree though, more unique content! I want to see all that stuff you guys laugh at in the locker room that we normally never get to see.
Except for wet towel snapping... bad memories from elementary school....

Generic get to know the athlete questions:
What was the hardest thing to adjust to from college to the pros?
What was the first thing you splurged on when you signed?

Do you play video games? What's it like to see yourself in NBA Live 08 or NBA 2K8 ?? I have NBA Live 08 for PSP... I hired some really good coaches in dynasty mode and now you have the highest skills ratings of anyone on the team. Let's hope you can do the same in real life!

Any ETA on when you can play again?
Are you living out in the West Linn area?
How much did you want to get drafted by the team that drafted Oden? Did you feel like there was any chance that you could play with him on the same team before the draft?
Have you had a chance to get out of town to the coast, mountains, beaches, or desert?

As a Blue Devel and Trail Blazer basketball fan I was very excited to see Portland draft you. Welcome to the Pacific Northwest! I am an ex-small college basketball player and currently a high school basketball coach. You have worked under some great coaches in Coach K and now Nate McMillian. I am interested in learning about how much alike or different they are in their approach to the game. Thanks for taking the time to interact with the fans and best of luck to you as you begin your NBA career.

Does it feel like "Entourage" somewhat with you and your boys living in the big city together, and YOU are the star? Just out of curiosity, did they come out there with you or did they by chance already have things lined up in Portland? I think it's pretty cool that you can still be around your friends while living in a city you would have never dreamed of living in before. Good luck.

BLOG TOPIC IDEAS: Team related anything... (I concur with above posters that any insight to the team, players, personalities, jokes, rituals, superstitions, moods, etc... is like crack to a bunch of us blazer junkies.); Porltand anything - experiences/impressions/likes/dislikes (I'd beware of dilvulging your neighborhood...some people are seriously whack!); hobbies - things of interest to you; what fires you up and gets you pumped up or pissed off?; players in the league you admire/fear/hate... and why?! Are you going to start traveling with the team now too?!
Thank you for taking the time to share with us... again, feedin' our Blazer fix.

Any chance you can get healthy and make sure Durant does not get rookie of the year?
I do not want to read about who we should have drafted first for the entire summer.
Come on Josh, make it happen...
Torogond said November 09, 2007
Does it bother you that the internet is flooded with clips of you crying into a towel on the bench at the end of your last game versus UNC?
What do you say to the overwhelming number of people (many of them Duke fans) who say you were a bust in college?
How do you explain entering college as the #1 player in your high school class, and then leaving at the end of your sophomore year as a 2nd round draft pick from a mediocre Duke team?
Do you feel Coach K did a poor job of developing you? Are there other college teams you think that would have used you better, given you a better shot at NCAA tourney success, and ensured you left school as a lottery pick? If so, which teams?
Awesome replied November 09, 2007
Most Duke fans I know (and I am NOT a Duke fan) would have loved to see McRoberts stick around. Yeah, his draft stock dropped when he was no longer playing with Shelden and J.J. But getting picked in the second round isn't the end of the world. Ask Gilbert Arenas. (I am not suggesting he will be another Gilbert...)
I cheer against Duke every game, but after reading Josh's first post, I can't find it in me to not cheer for him personally.
Good luck, Josh. Ignore the haters.

You sound like a typical Duke hater who is so blinded by this hatred that you've (obviously) cultivated that you don't really have a good view of reality. Kinda like if you go to the bar and ask a bunch of fat 28 year old brokers about teams and they all say Duke sucks, doesn't develop NBA players, overrated blah blah blah, and then you go ask a guy who plays ball or played ball and they may not love Duke but they don't deny the success of the program and it's players. I have no doubt Josh could've gone in the top 15 if he stayed four years. He stayed 2 and he's on a great young team with a perfect post player to accomodate his skills. You just sound like an ignorant hater.
trryrtyrywty said November 09, 2007
He was a top 5 pick prior to signing with d00k.
david1978pdx replied November 11, 2007
Consider this... He was coveted by Coach K. and Nate McMillan... Both of which are Team USA coaches... That should tell you something about Josh's talent and ability. Can't wait for the ankle to heal up so we can see you in a Blazers uniform!

Welcome to Portland. I am glad we have you and Greg and all the other fine young players on our team. Many Blazers have enjoyed this area so much that they have made this their permanent home, even after their playing days ended.
We are season ticket holders, and enjoy following our exciting young team. Hang in there, get your health back to 100%, and you will be fine. No doubt your first year will be a learning experience. Don't get upset that you are not playing at the present time. That will change. Just be ready when coach sends you into the game.
Congratulations on the last 3 victories. Last night's win was a strong performance from start to finish. But the other 2 games it seemed like the Blazers came out after halftime with a totally new approach to the game.
What accounts for the difference between the first and second half? Knowing more about what goes on, from a player's point of view, would be interesting. Thanks, and keep posting,
Mark

I read something recently about how your giant buddy is learning about new areas around town....more than just Tualatin. There isn't much there, but there is a little for everyone around the city and other areas in the state. I'm a Portland lifer so far so I hope you guys get to experience different things other than going on tours led by some transplant. This place is unique.
